I felt that the community I was part of remained quite vibrant through CU; we even got back some folk who'd been gone for ages, because we were having lots of fun in the new fixed group-work (which was still far from perfect, but better than being penalised for daring to play an MMO with other people).

Of course, that was the impression I had from my perspective. I'm keenly aware that given the people I've pointed this post out to it's not unlikely that we were on the same server, perhaps even in the same community.

@Talon: I don't see where you're disagreeing with me :-) I think the CU made it a great game and Smuggler was a good example of a profession that was made useful and fun by the rebalance.

If you mean it was fun after NGE, then that's fair enough. I can't really comment because I didn't play NGE for long, so I'm still not disagreeing with you.

I was very pleased when they fixed your crowd control. There's no fun in AoE tanking when you aren't constantly annoying people by breaking their CC ;-)

Talon wrote:

Interesting read though I would disagree with one point. Post CU SWG was a good game. At least for the class I played.

Post CU Smuggler was the best CC class I have ever played. For the 5 to 6 months that it was available pre NGE It was the most fun I've had with a class in any game ever. The pure depth of skills and play stiles made for some of my fondest remembered in game moments. I will never forget our excursion to the Avatar Platform with Talon performing CC.

Because I only had one account I never got to play the other classes during the CU, but for that brief time, I can tell you that this smuggler had a blast. :D

The CU for SWG was the point at which they reached some kind of balanced experience, yet one that was unique and had all the things that made SWG great (economy, social gaming, player cities etc).

Pre-CU was for the most part a very frustrating experience. Strip away the "newness" of a lot of what people were doing and there were many flaws - which you've zeroed in on.

How dissaponting in a Star Wars game to realise that in order to be effective you needed to be a martial artist, swordsman, or hammer wielding maniac. You could hardly get less "Star Wars" than that. Personally, the composite armour was had a very negative effect on my game experience - I just couldn't believe the world when the armies of light or dark were wearing these suits of heavy armour and charging at each other with what effectively ammounted to broadswords.

Interesting to think that, as you seem to suggest, this "break" in my connection to the game world stems from something as fundemental as the lack of proper combat balancing.
