Well, it seems my thought that I could write a weblog of mainstream appeal that maintained some element of distinction from the other things I do has died a death. I'm not a mainstream person - I probably wouldn't know one if I met one - and most of my interests are pretty obscure. So here goes nothing: I'm going to revise the categories and talk about the things I actually have some stuff to say on.
Such as:
MMOs
Currently I'm playing World of Warcraft, in a friend's guild. That's a real-world friend, for those who were wondering, but I doubt anyone who made it this far would value the distinction all that highly. I'm a veteran of Star Wars Galaxies, a game that has simply changed too much for my liking. I don't play it any more (currently too attached to my characters to cancel my accounts... I'll do that soon) but I do still blunder into my old guild's forums every once in a while.
Programming
Lately most of the coding I've done has been in PHP, modding phpBB for the PofP forums. But it's nothing a person who isn't interested in programming and/or WoW (that might be a strict and) would be all that interested in. For some time I've wanted to build some manner of online strategy game, and now that I'm used to phpBB I think that may be the perfect vehicle. More on all these things later.
Writing
I don't write as much as I used to, nor as much as I ought to. And when I have written, I tend to keep hold of it, waiting for the time that I'll want to one last draft. I've written quite a lot (I suspect the stuff that I wouldn't throw away now approaches half a million words), but a relatively small proportion has ever made it as far as anyone else, and none of it has ever been near anyone who might look at it professionally.
I barely read at all these days. Yes, I know it's bad...
Music
I play rhythm guitar reasonably well. I play bass guitar reasonably well. I play harmonica and piano very badly, and you don't want to hear me try lead guitar. My guitar collection has 32 strings at a time; I'll leave you to work out what I have.
RPGs
Called 'pen & paper' by the MMO crowd to differentiate them from computer RPGs, I'm a huge fan of traditional 'tabletop' roleplaying games. I can't give a decent and fair explanation in a couple of lines; let's just say that if you're thinking of Dungeons and Dragons, you're half right: D&D is an example of an RPG, but it's far from the best (in fact, it's among the worst in many ways). As with everything else I say, if anyone wants anything expounded they're welcome to ask, otherwise it may just happen on its own.
Currently I'm in a couple of weekly games, and then in a slight departure from the normal in-person format I'm in a couple of play-by-forum games that go on online. Be prepared for some of the crazy anecdotes.
That's not an exhaustive list, but it's getting there. If in a month's time I've still as little to write about as I did last month, I'll pack it in.
