The Night I Lost Four Ships at Once
2009-12-30
Not a brilliant night for playing EVE.
This was meant to be a triumphant post about how I'd spotted that the logistics cruiser I wanted was 30 million ISK (~26%) cheaper in Caldari space than at the Minmatar trade hub, and made a killing shipping three of them over (bearing in mind that the profit on the other two would have paid for most of the one I was keeping).
Except that some bugger blew up my hauler on the way home and destroyed the lot.
Thing is, I don't think it was an intentional attack. He was already in combat so attacking a new target would be an odd thing to do deliberately. On top of that, this was in high-security space and the NPC security forces were already arriving to smash him into tiny pieces as I flew away in my escape pod, and even with cargo like mine the maths of suicide-ganking in a battleship don't really work: if it was punitive destruction they were after they really didn't need to spend that much firepower.
Sure, he'd have to be a bit of an idiot to fire on a bystander by accident, but I think he'd have to be a bigger idiot to attack me deliberately.
With that in mind, the chances are he didn't use a cargo scanner on me, and didn't realise that he trashed a 25-mil hauler and failed to get his hands on more than a quarter-billion of cargo...
Strangely, I feel a lot better about losing ships/money in PvP than doing something stupid in PvE. Well, actually it's more about the doing something stupid: I've looked at all the things I could have done differently and besides staying put and not going anywhere I don't think any of them would have helped. That remains the case even though this is by far the biggest loss yet.
