The Princess Bride
People have been telling me to see The Princess Bride for years. About 3 years, I suppose - before that I'd never heard of it - but since then a number of people have been most emphatic. Which is why when I found it in Virgin's 4 for £20 yesterday, I bought it.
No spoilers, I'm just using the More link to save some space.
And I'm glad I did. As promised, it's good fun, being a jolly parody of fairy stories that is surprisingly deep in places, not to mention very witty. In particular, the 'storyteller joke' is excellently used, as Peter Falk (of Columbo fame) interjects in just the right places as he or his sickly grandson (neither of whom have names, or need them) take issue with things; it would be so easy to overdo that, and I felt it was just right.
Again, I don't have a great deal to say, and I'm not going to instruct you to go and see it, like I would 12 Angry Men, but it is a wonderful way of killing an hour and a half. It's just another piece that is well plotted, well written, well acted most of the time (I suspect 'André the Giant' wasn't chosen for his acting ability, but he's a bit ropey even though [perhaps because] his character is incredibly stupid), and just generally easy to watch and quite rewarding in doing so.
